Attending ACES Conference
The Agricultural Cooperation Establishes Success Conference (ACES) was the first time I saw students I knew in the setting of a multi-chapter FFA event. Not coming from a FFA background, I found it difficult to understand the entire value of the organization and learn every faucet it has to offer. Derry FFA took 8 students–7 freshmen and the chapter president–to the event.
At this event, I had 3 main takeaways, where I saw value in the organization that I had not previously considered:
Bringing people together
The conference brings together chapters from all over the state. This helps students get to know students from other schools in different counties and regions of PA. They attend workshops together, getting to know one another, and exchange Snapchats and phone numbers to stay in touch before the next conference. It is almost a networking event for high school students.
Introductory event for new FFA members
Students who attend are primarily in their first year of FFA. The event exposes them to many parts of FFA, meeting state officers, understanding the purpose of workshops and meeting others at the same point in their FFA journey.
Workshops for skill building
At ACES, there are workshops for the students to participate in. These range from goal setting to “Be a Star,” all focusing on setting yourself up for success in FFA, school, and life.
As I continue to attend FFA events, coach competitive teams, and help facilitate chapter meetings, I learn more and more about the importance of the organization within the three circle model and the value that it adds to Agricultural Education.
